Elder abuse is either an intentional act or a failure to act that causes harm to an older adult. It can also be an act that comes with a risk of harm. Although all elder abuse cases are serious crimes, not all are felonies. Some are considered misdemeanors, which carry less severe legal penalties.

Elder abuse takes many forms and isn’t always apparent.

Financial exploitation of elderly

Examples of this type of financial abuse might include: Using an older parent’s ATM card without their permission. Forging or misusing an older person’s checks. Using the authority granted by a power of attorney to use the older person’s funds for one’s own needs.

Example of elder abuse

The National Center on Elder Abuse distinguishes between seven different types of elder abuse. These include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, financial/material exploitation, neglect, abandonment, and self-neglect. Physical abuse.

Stop Elder Abuse Before the Will Gets Changed

You couldn’t make it up if you tried. A fraudster talks your elderly parent into changing their will at the last minute. Before you know it, a lifetime of your parent’s hard work and savings is in some scoundrel’s pocket. What if that scoundrel was a relative or respected caregiver?

Planning for your own future. With a power of attorney or a living will, you can address health care decisions now to avoid confusion and family problems later. Seek independent advice from someone you trust before signing any documents.

Staying active in the community and connected with friends and family. This will decrease social isolation, which has been connected to elder abuse.

Some of Our Work

Last Will or Testament, What is this? An antiquated term that refers to the document written by a testator that details what is to happen to property and animals owned by that testator upon death. Dying without a will can be costly and eliminate your ability to plan or provide for loved ones.

The UNITED NATIONS (UN) Addressing  Elder Abuse

“The COVID-19 pandemic is causing untold fear and suffering for older people across the world. Beyond its immediate health impact, the pandemic is putting older people at greater risk of poverty, discrimination, and isolation. It is likely to have a particularly devastating impact on older people in developing countries.”

Antonio Guterres
UN Secretary-General in New York, USA
